The battle resulted in the greatest number of casualties in every battle throughout the war, and was the turning point in the American civil war. In three days General George Meade’s Potomac Army defeated General Robert E. Lee’s confederate army, ending confederate attempts to invade the North. The first day ended with the Confederates in control of the city of Gettysburg, but he had failed to push to take the heights. Day two was a day of a series of actions at both ends of the battlefield at Culp Hill and Little Round Top. The third day ended with Pickett’s office disaster.
